A TV commercial is seen by hundreds of thousands of people, but nobody can try a product through a screen. BTL marketing solves exactly this problem: it takes a brand off the air and puts it in the buyer’s hands. A tasting in a supermarket, a promo stand in a shopping centre, branded shelf displays, a city festival — all of this is BTL. These tools don’t aim to reach the largest possible audience, but they deeply engage a specific person at the very moment they are ready to get to know the brand.
BTL and ATL: what is the difference
BTL stands for Below The Line. Historically, this was the name for everything outside classic media. ATL — television, radio, outdoor advertising — addresses a mass audience all at once. BTL is targeted and turns every person from a spectator into a participant.
Picking up a sample, getting a gift with a purchase, talking to a consultant, taking a photo in a branded zone — each leaves a personal impression. A banner or a video doesn’t have that effect. That is why BTL is especially needed in categories where choice is built on trust and personal experience.
Main BTL formats
Sampling and promotions
Handing out samples and running tastings is one of the most convenient ways to bring a new product to market. Shoppers in Tajikistan readily trust what they have tried themselves: the “I checked, so it’s true” logic convinces better than words. Promotions in busy shops in Dushanbe let you quickly see the reaction and calculate the result.
Events
This includes branded celebrations, festivals and corporate events. An event creates an emotional atmosphere: people remember where they had fun and found things interesting, and transfer that feeling to the brand. Large city events also provide reach comparable to media advertising.
Trade marketing
This is work at the point of sale: shelf design, POS materials, additional displays, incentive programmes for retail partners. Trade marketing acts at the most decisive moment — when the shopper is standing at the shelf and choosing. For fast-moving consumer goods, it is hard to hold your position without it.
Field marketing
Promoters go where the audience already is: markets, shopping centres, bus stops and residential areas. There is no need to invite people anywhere — the brand comes to them.
Loyalty programmes
Bonus points, loyalty cards, special privileges — all of these help retain existing customers. The aim of such programmes is not a one-off sale but regular return visits.
Why BTL works well in Tajikistan
For the local market, BTL has several advantages at once.
- Trust through personal contact. Recommendations and face-to-face communication carry more weight here than impersonal advertising.
- The power of word of mouth. A collective culture helps: if a group of people enjoyed an activation, their relatives, neighbours and colleagues will soon hear about it.
- Introducing new products. In segments where shoppers use the internet less, BTL often remains the main way to learn about a new product.
How to assess the results
Measuring BTL effectiveness is easier than is commonly thought. Each format has its own metrics.
| Format | What to measure |
|---|---|
| Promotions and sampling | number of contacts, share who went on to a trial purchase, sales during the promotion compared with a control period |
| Events | number of guests, media reach, Brand Lift afterwards |
| Trade marketing | share of shelf, product turnover, fulfilment of the distribution plan |
BTL combined with other channels
BTL delivers the greatest return as part of an integrated campaign. Television and outdoor advertising build broad brand awareness. Promotions and events provide live contact and turn awareness into trial and purchase. Digital supports communication before and after the activation, extending its reach online. To make all the elements work in harmony, a campaign starts with a well-thought-out plan — and that is where a media strategy helps.
The bottom line
BTL gives a brand something media channels lack: a live experience that people remember and retell. If you are interested in a related format, see our article on how to plan an event with measurable results.
