UGC Content: How Customers Can Create Advertising for Your Brand

The most convincing photos of your product may already have been taken, just not by your designer but by your customers. User-generated content, or UGC, is the reviews, photos, videos and posts that customers publish themselves. Let’s look at why it inspires more trust than traditional advertising and how to make it appear regularly.

Why other people’s experience feels closer than a brand’s words

UGC means everything published about a company not by the company itself but by its customers: a rating and comment on Google Maps, an Instagram story featuring your product, a YouTube review, a mention in a Telegram channel.

The mechanics of trust are simple. Looking at this kind of content, a person thinks: “Someone like me has already tried it, and they liked it.” This removes doubts that even the most beautiful ad can’t dispel, because everyone expects a brand to praise itself.

In Tajikistan, a friend’s advice has always carried more weight than any advertising. User posts essentially move this word of mouth onto social media.

Types of format

  • Ratings and reviews: on maps, in Instagram and Telegram comments, on the company website.
  • Photos and videos with the product: a customer shows off their purchase on their profile.
  • Unboxings and reviews: videos about first impressions and experience of use.
  • Result stories: before-and-after comparisons and accounts of how the product helped.
  • Hashtag posts: posts tagged with the brand’s own hashtag.

Four ways to get the content flowing

Ask directly

It sounds obvious, but this is the most effective method. After a purchase, send a short message: “We’d love it if you showed off your purchase on Instagram and tagged us.” Many satisfied customers are happy to respond when they are asked, rather than being left to take the initiative.

Create a moment people want to capture

Unusual packaging, a striking interior, an original way of serving a dish: anything that looks good on camera prompts people to reach for their phones. No extra motivation is needed.

Run a competition

The “post a photo with the product and get a gift or a chance to win a prize” mechanic quickly produces lots of posts. Just make sure that real customers take part, not people who collect prizes.

Build it into your loyalty programme

Bonuses or a discount for a review, a photo or a referral turn a one-off spike into an ongoing process.

Where to use the content you collect

Share customers’ posts on the brand’s accounts, crediting the author and getting their consent first. Photos of real people are worth testing in targeted advertising: they often get a stronger response than staged shots. Reviews can be featured on the website, in brochures and in ad layouts.

A separate note on rights: before using someone else’s photo or video in paid advertising, always get the author’s permission. It’s a matter both of respect for the person and of the company’s legal safety.

What it might look like in practice

Say a café invites guests to photograph their dish, post the picture with the café’s hashtag and get a dessert in return. The profile gradually fills with real photos from visitors, and the best shots are turned into ads. Their performance is then compared with ads based on professional photography, and whatever works better is kept.

What to measure

  • the number of posts with the brand hashtag over a period;
  • the reach of user content compared with the brand’s own posts;
  • conversion of ads using UGC versus professional photos;
  • the growth in new reviews per month.

The bottom line

User-generated content is one of the most cost-effective promotion tools. The costs come down to organising the process and small rewards, and in return the brand gets a regular stream of authentic material that people believe.

Start with a simple step: add an invitation to share impressions on the packaging or at the moment of payment, and then watch the response.
