YouTube remains one of the main video platforms for audiences in Tajikistan, and with vertical Shorts, advertisers now have more formats to choose from. Let’s look at how they differ and which one suits your brand’s goal.
The main YouTube video ad formats
Skippable In-Stream ads
The ad plays before, during or after a video. After 5 seconds, the viewer can skip it. There is no strict length limit, but Google recommends keeping videos under 3 minutes.
When it works: you need to explain your product in more detail, drive traffic to your website or generate leads. It is vital to get the key message across in the first 5 seconds — before the “Skip” button appears.
Non-skippable In-Stream ads
The viewer has to watch the ad to the end. Length ranges from 15 to 60 seconds depending on the campaign type.
When it works: it matters that the message is seen in full — for example, a new product launch or a promotion with specific terms.
Bumper
Short non-skippable ads of up to 6 seconds.
When it works: brand reminders, supporting a large campaign, frequent contact with your audience at low cost. In 6 seconds you can get one idea across — no more.
In-Feed
The ad appears in YouTube search results, in the recommendations feed and on the home page. The video only plays if someone taps on it themselves.
When it works: promoting useful brand content — reviews, tutorials, interviews — that people are happy to watch of their own accord.
Shorts ads
Vertical videos shown between Shorts. Viewers can skip them straight away by swiping up or down. Google recommends a length of up to 60 seconds.
When it works: a young, mobile audience and dynamic creative in the style people expect from short-form video. The very first frame has to hook the viewer.
How to choose a format for your goal
- Reach and awareness — bumpers, non-skippable ads, Shorts.
- Interest in the product — skippable In-Stream and In-Feed.
- Leads and website visits — skippable In-Stream with a clear call to action and a link.
The best results often come from a combination: short formats build reach, and then the people who watched are shown a more detailed video.
Creative matters more than format
The same video rarely works equally well in every format. What to bear in mind during production:
- shoot in several aspect ratios from the start — horizontal for In-Stream and vertical for Shorts;
- show the brand or product in the first few seconds;
- assume people will watch with the sound off — add subtitles and on-screen text;
- for Tajikistan, decide in advance which language the video will use, and if necessary make Russian and Tajik versions;
- prepare several variants so you can compare them in a test.
How to measure results
For reach campaigns, look at reach, frequency and view-through rate. For action campaigns, look at clicks, conversions and their cost. If the goal is to raise awareness, it is worth running a Brand Lift study: it compares how brand recall changes among people who saw the ad and those who didn’t.
Video advertising works best when the format, creative and campaign goal are chosen together rather than separately.
